Aluminium alloys have become increasingly common as shipbuilding materials in recent years. The range of vessels in which they are used has progressed from one or two in the past to many different designs today. In general, aluminium alloys are to be found wherever structural weight is a majorfactor, or when lowering the centre of gravity is the only way of ensuring ship stability. Interest in them has led to the development of new products, and this in turn has required the introduction of an increasing number of unconventional working procedures in shipyards. This also led shipyards and naval architects to seek design tools that would offer improved performances and accuracy, as away of obtaining optimum weight-saving on unconventional ships, namely surface-effect catamarans or high-speed light passenger crafts. The current situation also made it essential to issue specific rules on scantlings and use of materials for aluminium ships. In 1990,BV therefore started intensive work on such rules. The article informs onthese problems.
