This paper reports on a study of the tribological properties of ceramics involving friction and wear slide tests in both air and vacuum. Tests were undertaken with and without lubrication (the lubricant employed was sputtered MoS2). The ceramics tested (in either bulk or thin-film form) were silicon nitride, silicon carbide, titanium carbide, titanium nitride and zirconia. The study has demonstrated that, in general, unlubricated ceramics yield high friction in both air and vacuum. MoS2-lubricated ceramics give low friction in vacuum, their friction and wear properties comparing favourably with that of MoS2-coated bearing steels. The results indicate that MoS2-lubricated ceramic bearings should prove superior to similarly coated steel bearings in terms of reduced torque and prolonged low-friction lifetime. This is particularly attractive to the space industry where increasingly the demands are for components having lower torque with longer lifetimes.
