The Advanced Turbine Technology Applications Project (ATTAP) intends to advance the technological readiness of the ceramic automotive gas turbine engine. It aims at developing and demonstrating structural ceramic components that have the potential for competitive automotive engine life cycle cost and for operating 3500 hours in a turbine engine environment at temperatures up to 2500 F. This project is sponsored by the Department of Energy, Office of Transportation Technologies. General Motors Corporation (GM) is addressing ATTAP with a team composed of resources and personnel at the Allison Gas Turbine Division and at Advanced Engineering at the GM Technical Center. Work is performed under contract from the NASA Lewis Research Center, who provides project management and technical direction. The fifth year of GM's ATTAP has featured the following: cermaic component design refinements; ceramic process development and fabrication of components, characterization of ceramic components and materials, and testbed engine and rig testing. Ceramic component design activities have focused on refinements of the 26-blade-design gasifier rotor and the redesigned gasifier scroll mounting system coordinated with the supporting ceramic subcontractor fabrication activities. Additionally, low-emission combustor ceramic components were designed for the AGT-5 tstbed engine. Probabilistic finite element modeling has been used with material databases to design these components. The designs address the required probabilities of survival dictated by an overall Reference Powertrain Design (RPD).
