Traction and stability control systems can be designed for different levels of complexity. First systems with brake control used add-on hydraulics to produce a differential brake effect. Latest designs of traction control systems prefer fully ABS-integrated electronics and hydraulics. Automatic Stability Control Systems ASC used at BMW are analyzed regarding their technical effort and performance. ABS-integrated drive slip control systems are available in different complex designs. Various tests on adhesion critical road surfaces were carried out to find out how far system rationalisation influences system performance. For the study four different traction and stability control systems were used.
