While steel historically has been the predominant choice for exterior automotive body panel applications, SMC (sheet molding compound) and Class-A SRIM (Structural Reaction Injection Molding materials) are the leading polymeric composites competing for the horizontal body panel market today. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate polyurethane SRIM as a cost- and performance-competitive technology to achieve Class-A exterior panels. Because SMS is perceived to be the leading plastic alternative, a detailed comparison of SMC and SRIM will be examined. This comparison will include surface quality, physical properties, weight and part economics. For the analysis, all comparisons will be based on experience with molding a Pontiac Fiero hood outer, a typical Class-A composite application. The economic model comparing SMC and SRIM considers a two-piece hood construction and the use of a structural adhesive for bonding the inner and outer panels.
