Starting from the development of a Glow Plug Assisted DI-Methanol engine, AVL continued the work with the development of a turbocharged Compression Ignition engine for operation with various alcohols and alcohol blends. Besides the combustion process development for multi-alcohol fuel operation, the main objective of the development was to select an optimize the setting parameters, e.g. injection timing, EGR-rate, fuel metering, for operation with various alcohol fuels (methanol, ethanol as well as alcohol/gasoline blends). For this purpose, an electronically controlled engine management was used, selecting the parameters according to the fuel type applied. After steady-state development, the dynamic optimization of the engine installed in a test vehicle was carried out on a chassis dynamometer and during road operation to achieve low exhaust emission levels at best driveability and high power potential. The results show that the application of diesel-cycle alcohol engines is not only very promising to obtain high fuel economy, but also for future emission standards. Thus a significant contribution to limit the vehicle emissions can be made.
