In order to preserve the environment of the earth, the automobiles will be required to be made more lightweight. The lightweight vehicles, however, will have the problem of increased sprung weight changes. If those lightweight vehicles are to retain good handling and ride, a special solution must be found to this problem. This paper presents the new concept of a pneumatic suspension which has a simple mechanism of low pressure air bag combined with a lateral-mount GFRP (glass fiber reinforced plastics) leaf spring. It provides the mechanism for vehicle height adjustment, enables it to narrow the variation in natural frequency of sprung weight, and has proved to have an advantage of substituting GFRP and eliminating the stabilizer, thus achieving a breakthrough in saving weight of the total vehicle.
