The two-stroke engine is currently in vogue for future development as an automobile engine. The gas dynamics of the flow through this engine and its ducting is more complex than that of the four-stroke unit presently in automobile production. Consequently, there is a need for powerful experimental and theoretical design tools to aid the R & D process. This paper contends that such tools are available and provides examples of their utilisation. In one particular case, that of modelling the scavenging process, a new approach is proposed and exemplified.
