Welded aluminum constitutes an important part of many space structures. Knowledge of the properties of weld material and of the material surround the weld is important for design and modeling of the structure containing the welded joints. Photoelastic coatings (Photostress) were used to determine stress-strain curves in uniaxial tension for the weld material and the material in the heat affected zones. Contraction ratios for the material were determined using a tangent modulus approximation and were used in calculation after the material reached its proportional limit. After converting the maximum shearing strain obtained from the Photoelastic coating to maximum normal strain, stress versus normal strain curves were plotted. Since photoelastic coatings provide a method to measure strain at a point rather than over a finite gage length, use of the coatings may improve the accuracy of the data over that normally obtained using strain gages applied to the specimen in the different zones.
