The side impact is the second most common impact mode for passenger cars but the risk for car occupants of being injured in a side impact is higher than for the frontal impact. In Europe a proposal for the approval of vehicles with regard to the protection of the occupants in the event of a side collision exists and is in discussion at the EEC in Brussels as well as at the ECE in Geneva. As an alternative a so-called composite test procedure (CTP) is under development by the automotive industry. In autumn 1990 the US introduced a federal standard for side impact protection. The different test procedures will be described and compared.
