Pin-on-disk wear tests were conducted to investigate the influence of coal-fuel combustion particulates on wear under boundary lubrication conditions. Mineral oil without additives was used as the lubricant; 52100 bearing steel was employed to evaluate wear response. For comparison, tests were conducted with oil containing unburned coal-fuel particles and with oil containing mineral-matter particles extracted during the processing of the coal-fuel, as well as with oil containing no added particles. Furthermore, to determine the effect of particle size and hardness, similar tests were conducted using quartz, MgO and Al2O3 particles. Under the conditions of the test, the addition of 10 wt.% combustion particulates to the mineral oil resulted in about a 6-fold increase in wear rate. A similar addition of unburned coal-fuel particles resulted in approximately a 70% increase, while mineral-matter particles caused a 35-fold increase in wear rate. In general, wear rate increased with increasing particle concentration for all particle types studied. Wear rate was found to increase exponentially with increasing particle size and hardness. The relative humidity of the surrounding air environment was found to have a significant influence on wear rate under some conditions.
