As environmental concerns develop, the reduction of road vehicle aerodynamic drag will, once again assume increasing importance. The underside of a typical car is aerodynamically rough and contributes significantly to the overall drag. Wind tunnel experiments have been conducted to determine the potential gains achievable from a smooth underfloor. The influence of aerodynamic lift on the drag reduction is assessed and the limitations of the test technique discussed.
