This article reviews the results of several recent studies into the response of structures subjected to large dynamic loads which produce plastic strains dominating elastic effects. In particular, the dynamic axial progressive buckling of unstiffened and stiffened tubes is examined for low impact velocities and for unstiffened tubes acted on by high impact velocities which activate the phenomenon of dynamic plastic buckling. The quasi-static behaviour of two structures is discussed in order to provide some insight into the range of validity of quasi-static methods of analysis for structural crashworthiness problems. The influence of strain rate on the plastic flow of ductile materials undergoing large strains is examined together with some recent observations on the variation of rupture strain with strain rate.
