The current situation physical aging in polymeric materials used in the automobile industry will be reviewed. The underlying theory of physical aging will be presented and the importance of the free volume distribution discussed. A technique allowing direct measurement of the free volume in polymers will be discussed and its relevance to solving practical problems considered. Measurement of the time dependence of the tensile creep compliance measured over the time range 10-8 and 105 have been predicted on the basis of a general viscoelastic model, using parameters obtained from tests of short duration. This data confirms the general validity of the free volume approach in the prediction of creep data but does not help with resolving the problem of the molecular basis of the phenomena being studied.
