Wood fiber composites with a high fiber content possess many desirable qualities such as having rather high specific strength and modulus, showing good acoustical properties, being easily tooled and based on a renewable resource and being environmentally friendly. Wood fibers dimensionally stabilized by acetylation were used in manufacturing of high performance composites with a fiber content of 80-90 wt %. Flexible fiber mats were pre-fabricated and molded into products with complex shape and predetermined density. The fiber mats also contained bi-components thermoplastic fibers heat-sealed to each other and to the wood fibers, and 8-10 wt% of a thermosetting phenolic resin. The properties of molded products can be considerably improved by surface coating with other materials in the molding step in order to improve strength, appearance and resistance to wear. Molded products of this kind can not only replace ordinary wood-based composites for interior automotive panels, but also find new applications, and replace other materials, in exterior automotive parts.
