A large Hopkinson's bar device is proposed in order to achieve a progress in the precise measurement of the peak crushing strength and of the whole loading-displacement characteristics of the energy absorption of thin sheet metal structures for car safety at impact speeds ranging between 5 m/s and 40 m/s. It is shown that this method allows us to avoid the errors, caused by inertia effects, wave reflections and energy losses, which affect the measurements of the same characteristics performed in a drop-weight impact rig by accelerometer and load cell.
