The circular CLAM wave energy device has undergone some design changes in an attempt to optimise both the operational performance and the structural design. These optimisations have brought the predicted electricity costs down into the range 3 - 6p/kWh. The paper describes the development work and its effects on predicted electricity costs and outlines the prototype design and testing programme needed to lead to the future exploitation of the United Kingdom wave energy resource.
