A joint project between MFG and Chrysler Corporation was undertaken to determine the feasibility of constructing the required reinforcement for a pick-up box using production proven technology and procedures. Directed Fiber Preform Process was used due to the size and complexity of the original design of the pick-up box. Earlier studies using woven fiber glass reinforcement tailored to shape had proven that a composite pick-up box had the necessary strength properties. Tailoring of woven reinforcement was not considered practical for a production process. The Directed Fiber Preform Process proved versatile enough to overcome the manufacutring problems the original design and tooling dictated. The procedure used to construct the compound pick-up box is described.
