The properties of the carbon fiber reinforced glass matrix composite system are described with particular reference to the potential application of this material to space based satellites. The tensile and compression properties of composites fabricated with Hercules HMU and Tonen FT700 carbon fibers are described and it is shown that high levels of both stiffness and strength comparable to polymer and metal matrix systems are achievable. Composite thermal expansion is also shown to be outstanding due to the low CTE of both fiber and matrix while composite thermal conductivity is high due to the exceptionally high carbon fiber conductivity. The results of six years of space based exposure on board the LDEF satellite document the space environmental resistance of this composite while two trade studies for truss structures and radiator fins demonstrate the advantages of this composite over other candidate systems.
