HIP consolidation of spherical prealloyed powder in precisely configured canisters forms the basis of manufacture for a new class of engine components. These are hollow parts with thin, (possibly variable) walls and the mechanical and metallurgical properties usually associated with forgings or sheet fabrications. (Forgings, however, are solid and are not net-shape; fabrications can be expensive and heavy). The PM components which are the subject of this paper are made of prealloyed powder, which is HIP in seamless metal canisters containing steel cores, and combine the properties associated with wrought structures with the intricate detail usually found only in castings.
