The use of glass fibre reinforced plastics (GRP) in structural applications offshore is inhibited by the current regulations which prohibit the use of combustible materials. The development of GRP has reached such a level that for many applications they might be sondered as preferred materials especially where maintenance costs and corrosion effects are taken into account. This paper reviews the current regulations and proposes how the use of combustible materials can be controlled. This work was performed in conjunction with offshore regulatory bodies.
