GKSS performs a comprehensive underwater R a. D-program. A special object of the program is the development of an advanced handling system in order to automate subsea work such as cleaning, non-destructive testing and welding of offshore structures. One object of the investigations is the application of robot guided high pressure water jet technology for cleaning steel surface areas on offshore structures. The paper describes cleaning experiments on steel samples under controlled test conditions in air and in water with successful removal of marine growth and rust on small surface stripes such as welds. For generating a plain water jet in these tests a standard nozzle type with orifice diameters of 0.3/0.4 mm was used at pump pressures up to 270 NPa. Some fundamental investigations are included e.g. microscopic inspection of the cleaned surface, description of structure and erosion profile generated by the jet as well as searching for micro cracks. Further, underwater tests at increasing ambient pressure up to 300 msw were performed. Principal findings of these tests were: jet profile was strongly deformed, and significant loss in cleaning efficiency was obtained.
