Compressor poppet valves from five manufacturers were tested for efficiency and reliability in mainline natural gas transmission service. Valve efficiencies were evaluated thermodynamically and ranged from 86 % to 89 % at a compression ratio of 1.28 to 1.30. Differences in efficiency between valves of up to 1.5 % were typical. All valves experienced a decline in efficiency at lower compression ratios. Some manufacturers were not able to provide reliable valves on their first attempt. Valve reliability ranged from excellent to unacceptale. Two manufacturers provided valves that were both efficient and reliable with their initial design.
