The automotive industry emphasis on cost reduction, quality improvement, and lower weight to meet CAFE standards have prompted the industry to develop and apply a new generation of low weight materials. Composites has emerged as a potential to meet these strategy objectives. As a result composites materials are starting to replace steel in many structural applications such as bumper beams, load floors, seats and others. However, the implementation of composites on a large scale will depend on the resolution of several issues. These issues include: 1) Economics, 2) Part Manufacturing, 3) Vehicle Assembly, 4) Design, 5) Vehicle Performance, 6) Environmental Concerns, 7) Legal, and 8) The Customer Perceived Value. The paper will attempt to briefly discuss each one of these issues.
