This paper will focus on the implementation of real time animation and modal analysis techniques to influence the design of an automobile door. The concentration of using these techniques will be to ensure that all appropriate customer-driven durability requirements are met. Additionally, the procedure outlined efficiently teams the potential of analytical and laboratory computer-based modeling techniques. This particular paper addresses one of the durability requirements of an automobile door. The durability design requirement for this particular door specifies the completion of a standard minimum number of door slam cycles without the occurrence of any structural fatigue cracking. The Real Time Animation Analysis technique was used to capture the motion of the door upon impact with the door aperture panel. Accelerations were measure on the door inner panel and frame and converted to their respective displacements to describe the deformation of the door upon impact. An experimental modal analysis of the door was performed in order to describe the inherent dynamics of the door inner panel and frame. The mode shapes identified were compared to the deflection patterns observed in the Real Time Animation.
