The slow speed crosshead engine has undergone rapid development in recent years and this development has so far been sustained by parallel advances in metallurgy and lubrication technology such that today's engines are operating in a seemingly trouble-free area with regard to cylinder liner and piston ring wear. The Paper warns against any feelings of complacency and presents a wide selection of field results from a programme of formulation testing which indicate that todays engines may be operating close to a critical dividing line between acceptable and excessive wear. It suggests that lubricants with a higher performance level than those commonly used should be employed if the Shipowner is to have an added factor of safety against crossing that line.
