The paper presents investigations on the energy absorption behaviour of composite materials and generic structural elements with the aim to improve the occupant's survivability in crashing vehicles. Emphasis is given to the energy dissipating mechanisms of crushing composites depending on the constituent materials, crush initiation, laminte architecture, and structural configuration. Results from static and dynamic crushing of aircraft subfloor intersection elements and keel beam sections are presented. First attempts are made to predict the force-deflection curves of those elements.
