The increased performance rquirements of structures and devices necessitates new and improved advanced materials and processes. New aerospace system requirements are discussed, and the necesssary steps required to introduce new materials and processes into these systems presented. The state of maturity of one new process, mechanical alloying, the subject of the present conference, is discussed in detail.
