In 1988-89 the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at the University of Glasgow was asked to provide R a. D support in the analysis of Hydrodynamic and Stability characteristics and in Structural Design for the development of a new modular construction concept of a versatile semi-submersible platform for oil and gas production world-wide. This work was undertaken (for Seaways Engineering Ltd.) and the resulting design has undergone a full risk analysis by Lloyd's Register who have awarded their pre-certification certificate to the design which has also received very favourable comment and is now being marketed. The paper describes the manufacture of a 1/100 scale model of the platform made in PVC (rather than steel) in order to concentrate on the distribution of wave induced primary stresses, especially in way of the column/pontoon corner connections. These stresses were inferred from measurements on 101 strain gauges during dynamic wave loading tests in a wave tank. Analytical and computational modelling of stress distributions for the same wave loads showed good correlation with these measured in-plane primary stresses. The computational models were then used to obtain the total combined primary stress response to regular wave loading for the full-scale structure.
