Rapid solidification and powder metallurgy (RS-PM) techniques provide Si dispersed Al alloys with a possibility of exhibiting favourable properties and being applied in automobile, aircraft and electric industries. The reason is that the alloys produced by the RS-PM possess a massive, finely dispersed phase - Si crystals, which contributes greatly to the strength, wear resistance and thermal stability of the alloys. To achieve the above high performances, consolidation of the starting material in the form of powders by extrusion is an essential processing step. In this process, on one hand, the fine microstructure given by RS-PM has to be retained; on the other hand, a coherent structure which is principally attributed to a sufficiently high temperature, strain and strain rate should be produced at the same time. All these factors influence the extruded microstructure and hence mechanical properties. Obviously, a fundamental understanding of the structural characteristics of the extruded alloys in relation with processing conditions and mechanical properties is of great importance. Little is, however, known about the deformation mode operating during the extrusion of the RS-PM alloys with a very high volume of dispersed phase, nor about the relationships among processing conditions, microstructure and mechanical properties.
