The high Self Ignition Temperatures of Methyl and Ethyl Alcohols makes them unsuitable for use in normal Diesel engines. However, the proneness of these fuels to get ignited by a hot surface makes them pefrom well in engines equipped with a hot ignition source. Heat release analysis of engine pressure Vs crankangle data yields a lot of information on the combustion occurring in the engine. In this work a simple heat release method which was developed has been applied to analyse the Rate of Heat patterns of a Ceramic Hot Surface Ignition engine (CHSI) and a Glowplug Hot Surface Ignition (GHSI) engine both operated an Methanol fuel. It is seem that a reduction in the electrical energy input to the hot surface from its optimum level increases the ignition delay and combustion duration in both the engines. The heat release rate of the CHSI engines is sharp, triangular and close to TDC like that of an Otto engine. The GHSI engine however has a larger combustion duration and sluggish start and end of combustion. Unlike the CHSI engine the GHSI engine has two stages in its heat release pattern. The ignition delay in both these engines dos not vary with power output indicating that only the distance between the injector and hot surface determines it.
