To achieve the high power density requirements associated with prime movers for military vehicles the designer can opt for the highly turbocharged diesel engine route. The main disadvantages, from the military point of view, are the lack of low speed torque and slow transient response. Developments in turbocharger technology, in particular the advent of variable geometry turbine stage turbochargers (VGT), can reduce these drawbacks. To quantify the possible improvements in vehicle performance, an engine with standard fixed geometry turbocharging (FGT) was fitted to a tracked vehicle and trialed over a variety of terrains and gradients. The engine was then fitted with a VGT, the rated power remaining constant, and the trials repeated. The data presented shows that the BGT significantly improves vehicle performance both in terms of acceleration and gradient climbing ability. In conclusion other potential benefits to be gained by the use of VGT are discussed.
