The use of exhaust gas turbochargers for surface ship marine diesels has been common practice for many years, whereas for submarines, operating under conditions of both high and fluctuating inlet depression and exhaust back pressure, the use of naturally aspirated or mechanically supercharged engines has been preferred. The potential advantages to be gained by using turbocharged diesel engines have encouraged research into their use in submarines. This paper provides some historical background to diesel engine development for Royal Navy submarines and then describes work currently being undertaken by the Royal Aerospace Establishment Pyestock and Paxman Diesels Limited in the turbocharged submarine diesel engine field.
