At an early stage in the crashworthiness design of a new vehicle or in the process of improving an existing vehicle, structural components are tested separately from the main bodyshell to examine force-deflection characteristics and modes of deformation. Design changes can be made at this stage to improve the energy absorption capability and knowledge of peak forces guides the design of supporting structure. This data is also invaluable in the setting up and validation of non-linear Finite Element computer models of vehicle crush. Test methods described in this paper range from the simple component test to the more complex part vehicle crashtest and cover frontal and rear impact modes.
