Powder metallurgy offers several processing routes to produce high performance aluminum alloys. The goals for applications are - besides aerospace - in the field of the automotive and electronics industries. Depending on the price/performance ratio and the field of application, methods like rapid solidification, mechanicall alloying and spray compaction (Osprey process) are used. Promising alloys are DISPAL M (Al-C-O, AlSi12-C-O), mechanically alloyed), DISPAL A (AlSiFeNi, atomized) or spray compacted materials of similar composition. The paper gives a survey of the properties of several differently processed materials, shows some examples for applications and discusses technical and economical aspects of the applications in automotive industry and the limitations of the different processes.
