End face seals used in automotive air conditioning compressors are required to maintain effective seal performance during long stationary periods when the air conditioner is not in use. In this paper, the authors describe static leakage experiments using test specimens which have various surface topographies on the sealing surfaces of the cover plates. Static leakage was measured with respect to air, mineral oil (refrigeration oil) and a mixture of mineral oil and CFC-12 (chlorofluorocarbon) normally used in actual compressor operation.
