A flexible assembly cell based on two industrial robots was built. Automated assembly methods for a three stage industrial transmission gearbox were developed in the cell. The gearbox construction is modular, including different transmission ratios. At first an instrumented, microprocessor-controlled hydraulic press and modular press tooling were developed for assembling the tight fittings (gearwheels and bearings on the shafts). One gripper for handling gearbox covers and the preassembled wheels/shafts was built. The most challenging work was the engagement of the helical-geared precision gearwheels/shafts, one pair of gearwheels after another, on the gearbox basecover. This was achieved by using an instrumented gripper on the assembly robot in conjunction with the press operation.
