The high technical potential of Fiber Reinforced Plastic Components (FRP) so far has been only restricted to special applications (Aerospace) mostly for reasons of cost related to the difficult assessment of their mechanical properties and to the manufacturing processes not yet mature for large scale production. Today, the reduction in cost of materials and related processes has made it possible the cost effective application of selected FRP components also in the automotive market. IVECO in the framework of research and development activities intended to increase the vehcile pay-load in a cost effective way, have designed and developed, a rear suspension based on longitudinal FRP Monoleaf springs. The paper describes the design, analysis and testing activities (bench and road) carried out on the subject.
