To help the UK commercial vehicle industry produce quieter truks for the 1990s, a project known as the Quiet Heavy Vehicle 90 (QHV90) Project was initiated by the UK Government. As part of this project Perkins Technology developed a low noise naturally aspirated DI Diesel engine. This quiet engine was then installed in a standard production 5.6 tonne commercial vehicle. This paper documents the results of the noise work carried out on the vehicle, and demonstrates how EEC noise legislation can be met without the need to resort to engine enclosures. The effect that the low noise engine had on in-cab noise levels, both subjectively and objectively, is also documented.
