A flight experiment called Rarefied-Flow Aerodynamics Measurement Experiment (RAME) is currently planned for the Aeroassist Flight Experiment (AFE) mission. The experiment hardware consists of a dedicated accelerometer instrument package designed to make measurements in the rarefied-flow flight regime, including the transition into the hypersonic continuum regime. The RAME instrument with a resolution of 1 x 10-6 g, the inertial guidance system, and a stagnation pressure sensor comprise the principal data sources for the experiment. The primary goal is to obtain flight measurements throughout the rarefied regime on aerodynamic force and moment coefficients to build a flight data base, to verify ground-to-flight extrapolation techniques, and to provide a technology basis for future aeroassisted orbital transfer vehicles. Vehicle maneuvers will be performed to explore attitude variation effects, and acceleration ratios will be examined up to orbital altitudes. A secondary objective of the experiment is a postflight evaluation of the determination of vehicle mass properties (e.g., mass, c.g. location, and moments of inertia). Separate maneuvers will be performed to enhance the various mass property components. The objective here is to explore robust control theory formulations which are applicable to special return aeroassisted orbital transfer vehicle payloads such as unspecified satellites, debris, and asteroids.
