Analyses have been conducted to determine the bounce response, bolster dynamic loading and centerplate separations for typical 70 ton and 100 ton freight cars travelling over track having uniform sinuisodal profile variations at a speed corresponding to the bounce natural frequency. It is found that a critical amplitude of sinusiodal profile variations exists for a typical value of snubber friction, which if exceeded, may result in centerplate separation, spring bottoming or both. The results are dependent on car loading. Computations are presented for the maximum bolster loads and maximum centerplate separations that would be expected to result from periodic profile variations. For a 100 ton truck with 8 kips per truck snubber friction and at the critical car load of 88 tons (88 kips per truck), the model predicts peak bolster loads of 415 kips for profile variations greater than 0.5 inch peak to peak. For a 70 ton truck under similar conditions the force predicted is 183 kips.
