The paper describes the features of short wavelength corrugation as found on British Rail. A formation mechanism is proposed involving small periodic wear of the railhead by a slip-stick process. The rate of wear produced by many wheelsets is found to depend on the vertical dynamic interaction of the wheel-rail system. The effect of the finite size of the contact patch is allowed for and the corrugation patterns predicted by the mechanism agree well with observations, particularly in respect of the relative independence of corrugation wavelength and train speed.
