The goal of the Air Force Intelligent Automated Assembly Thrust is to increase quality and reduce cost of military airframes. Within this thrust, the Flexible Assembly Subsystems (FAS) Program has developed and demonstrated the technologies required for flexibility and adaptability in automated assembly and fastening in this high-precision, low-batch-count manufacturing environment. The FAS Vertical Integration phase demonstrates integration of the FAS robotic workcell into existing and planned above-the-shop-floor computerized business and technical management systems. This paper presents the results, lessons learned and preliminary conclusions of this successful four-year demonstration program, along with preliminary plans for implementation of FAS technologies on the factory floor.
