This paper discusses the ability of uranium zirconium hydride (UZrH) fuel to meet the 10-year life requirement fore the SNAP Dynamic (SNAP-DYN) nuclear reactor being considered for use in space power applications. The SNAP-DYN reactor is a derivative of the SNAP UZrH reactors developed and qualified for space flight during the SNAP program from 1956 to 1973. The UZrH fuel used in these reactors was developed through extensive theoretical and experimental work resulting in a large base of unirradiated and irradiated fuel data. A recent evaluation of swelling, hydrogen loss, burnup, and other data indicates UZrH fuel can support the lifetime requirement for the SNAP-DYN design without an extensive test program. SNAP UZrH fuel represents a proven technology that can be tapped to provide reliable space nuclear power sources in the near term without a major research and development investment.
