AEROSPATIALE has been involved for many years in Kinetic Energy Storage (KES). For space applications, KES requires the use of composite material rotors and magnetic bearings. Integrated system is preferable using pairs of contrarotative wheels to ensure simultaneously attitude control, energy storage and bus voltage control. Two different types of magnetic bearing using permanent magnets have been developed. The first is a very suitable solution due to a permanent power consumption of a few watts only but requires a rotor with a high balancing stability. If such a rotor cannot be achieved the second technology can be a prefered solution. The increase of the servoloop power consumption due to residual unbalance can be reduced by a special narrow band filter synchronized with the rotation speed. Some experimental subassemblies of KES systems have been developed and tested in AEROSPATIALE such as: magnetic bearings, different types of rotor and motor/generators. The results obtained are discussed. At lest, AEROAPTIALE is equipped with one of the most performant test set-up in Europe.
