The paper describes the development of an electrically operated variable damper for semi-active vehicle suspension systems. Damping force control is achieved by a novel design of floating disc valve which acts as a variable flow orifice. In the investigation the valve was externally attached to a uni-flow shock absorber with the hard-ride characteristics determined by a normal spring loaded valve. Variable damping characteristics through to the soft-ride condition were controlled by the disc valve. From the experiments performed, it was shown that the damping force could be adjusted satisfactorily over the operating range by using either disc position or differential pressure control.
