A feasibility study of laser treatments to obtain NiAl coatings on AlSi base alloy as a substrate, of large use for application on automotive components, was carried out. The hardness and the surface structure with regard to the laser treatment parameters was investigated. The coatings were carried out by plasma-spray predeposition and afterwords by laser reflowing. Non destructive testings were employed to reveal the defectiveness within the laser treated zone; the related results and the metallurgical analysis pointed out the correlation between process parameters, hardness, elemental concentrations and defectiveness. SEM, XPS and Auger analysis were used to investigate the morphologies and chemical composition of the surface layers obtained after treatment. Moreover, a better understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the formation of the cavities was achieved by Auger analysis.
