This paper considers the implications of the pressure being applied by the major vehicle manufacturers on their component suppliers to install CAD/CAM. The key area considered is the difficulty of communications between the systems used at the vehicle manufacturers. The viability of interfaces, including IGES, is considered. The bulk of the Paper is based upon the experience gained from a number of studies undertaken for clients in the automotive component supply industry, and gives practical advice on the procedures of selecting and benchmarking suitable CAD and CAM systems.
