For the automated assembly of aerospace structures to become reality in American aerospace industries, we must address the design and manufacturing problems that prevent automation. Attempts to automate existing manually assembled structures will not realize the full potential of automation if the design itself does not recognize the limitations that automation will present. Design guidelines must be established to assist the designer in assessing the ease of assembly of a proposed design and improving its chances for automation. Methods for assessing the ease of assembly of a design already exist for the production of small, high volume products. The strengths and weaknesses of these methods, as well as future research topics, are discussed.
