The first vertical Drivmatic fastening machine is being used at Martin Marietta Manned Space Systems, in the fabrication of the Space Shuttle external fuel tank. In comparison, the standard Drivmatic fastening machine has exclusively used the C-frame design for the machine's main frame. The vertical machine's main frame consists of several main structures, including a rotational axis which positions the workpiece in the vertical plane, as opposed to the horizontal plane on the standard machine. This new technique greatly reduces the limitations on tooling part size requirements; however, this orientation also requires special considerations for tooling and control techniques unique to this fastening machine. The technique and their applications are discussed.
